Peace with the US, the Taliban begin to free 20 prisoners

Jakarta, Celebes Magazine.blogspot.com: - The Taliban will free 20 detainees in the city of Kandahar, Afghanistan, as part of an agreement to exchange prisoners with the United States.
The news of this release came after the chief of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan held a meeting with Taliban leaders. During the meeting, the two sides agreed to reduce years of violence in Afghanistan.
Washington signed an agreement with the Taliban in February. Points of the agreement include a ceasefire and the release of prisoners by the Taliban and Afghanistan.
In the agreement, the US also demanded the Afghan government to free 5,000 Taliban prisoners. In return, militant groups were asked to release 1,000 pro-government prisoners.
Since last week, Taliban representatives began meeting with the Afghan government to discuss the exchange of prisoners.
"Today, 20 prisoners from the Kabul government will be released and will be handed over to Red Cross representatives," Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen wrote via Twitter as reported by AFP on Sunday (12/4).
However, the agreement was tough after Kabul claimed that the Taliban requested the release of 15 of their high commanders. On the other hand, militant groups say Kabul is only buying time to realize the agreement to release prisoners.
Afghan National Security Council spokesman Javid Faisal reprimanded the Taliban for not having begun to reduce violence and a ceasefire that had previously been agreed upon.
"They (the Taliban) must also have a face-to-face meeting with the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan," Faisal said.
The agreement between the US and the Taliban is seen by many as a first step towards peace, after the two were involved in a war decades ago.
In the agreement it was written that the Taliban must give a 'clear message' so that those who threaten western countries 'have no place in Afghanistan'. This could be interpreted, the Taliban were asked to drive terrorist groups such as Al-Qaeda and ISIS away from Afghanistan.
In the agreement signed on Saturday (29/2) in Doha, Qatar, both parties agreed that Afghanistan hand over 5,000 of its prisoners to the Taliban starting March 10. In exchange, the Taliban will surrender 1,000 prisoners and open the door of the meeting.
But the Afghans had rejected an agreement to free 5,000 prisoners. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said there were no commitments related to the exchange and surrender of prisoners to the Taliban in an agreement with the United States.
