*EVIDENCE OF BUGIS SEAFARERS' HISTORICAL HERITAGE ON SELAYAR ISLAND* ⚓

*SELAYAR* - IMC News

Selayar Island is one of the key points on the Bugis people's sailing route for hundreds of years. It is nicknamed "The Land of Lontara in the South" because it served as a stopover and base for Bugis seafarers.

Here are some pieces of historical evidence:

*1. Maritime Artifacts & Traditions*

- *Phinisi & Lamba Ships*

Selayar is known as one of the places for building and docking Bugis phinisi ships. To this day, there are still traditional shipyards along the coast.

- *Celestial Navigation & Lontara Sailing Manuscripts*

Bugis seafarers in Selayar still inherit traditional navigation knowledge using stars, wind, and ocean currents. There are ancient lontara manuscripts that record Bugis sailing routes to Australia, Malaysia, and even South Africa.

*2. Historical Sites & Ancient Tombs*

- *Tombs of Selayar Kings*

At Bontobiraeng Fort and its surroundings are the tombs of kings and Bugis admirals who once led naval fleets.

- *Bontobiraeng Fort*

A relic of the Selayar Kingdom. It formerly functioned to monitor shipping lanes in the strategically important Selayar Strait.

- *Ancient Ports*

There are remnants of ports in Pattumbukang and Bontosikuyu that were once stopover points for Bugis trading ships from Makassar to NTT, Maluku, and even Australia.

*3. Culture & Place Names*

- *Bajau & Konjo Seafaring Communities*

Many communities in Selayar still make their living from the sea and have genealogical ties to Bugis seafarers.

- *The Name "Selayar" Itself*

It is believed to come from the word "Selayang" = a place to stop briefly. This proves that Selayar was once an important transit port for Bugis sailors.

- *Mappadendang & Mappacci Laut Ceremonies*

Rituals to ward off misfortune and give thanks for marine harvests that are still practiced by Bugis fishermen in Selayar.

*4. External Historical Records*

In VOC and 17th-18th century European sailors' records, Selayar was referred to as "the center of the bravest Bugis seafarers." They became suppliers of salt, rice, and seafaring labor for the Sultanate of Gowa-Tallo.
